Hell's Gate Thermal Reserve
The young lady at the counter offered us a mud bath and giggled when Brian said he'd already taken his shower. Other than no geysers at Hell's Gate (although there are geysers nearby), walking through here was like visiting Yellowstone in an hour - fumaroles, a large mud volcano, a hot thermal waterfall, and eerie landscape.
Playwright George Bernard Shaw, famous for being an athiest (also a socialist and a vegetarian), visited here in the 1930s and gave some of the features the names that are still used. "I wish I'd never seen the place. It reminds me too vividly of the fate theologians have promised me."
Cutest was the sign warning that visitors who throw objects into the pools may be asked to retrieve them.
