The AKL Novotel is nearly brand-new, opening in 2011. We have no status - insert shudder - with the Accor chain but were treated very well. What a treat it was to walk across the street from the Internatiional Arrivals exit doors and into the hotel lobby.
We paid for a breakfast-included rate and enjoyed a quite decent buffet Saturday morning. We were still waking up and didn't notice this giant wall of ferns until after we'd walked past it and sat down.
After a second cup of coffee we walked back across the street and caught the Airport Express Bus into Auckland.
Its final stop on the 40-minute route is Princes Wharf and the Auckland Hilton, our base for the next two nights. Our room is ready and we've been upgraded on our cheap rate to a harborview room on the fourth floor. People complain when a cruise ship docked alongside spoils their view but there are no cruise ships today and we take in the sights.
The lovely old building sitting amidst the modern structures directly below is the old Ferry Building, built in 1909-1912 and now housing restaurants.
