Last night it absolutely poured buckets of rain starting an hour or two after we fell asleep, enough that we had to get up to close all of our windows and vents.
Today, amazingly, there was no rain as we made our way up to the northernmost tip of New Zealand, Cape Reinga.
We walked down to the lighthouse that overlooks the meeting of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean - very impressive.
On the way back down this route we detoured up a muddy road for a chance to view what must be some of the largest sand dunes in the world, stretching upward as far as 300 meters (300 yards +).
Yesterday was the low point of our trip, but only in the sense that it wasn’t the peak experience that we were anticipating. Today, however, made up for it.
Our advice to anybody touring the North Island for one week only would be to head south from Auckland, as we did in 2009. We’ve driven on some very challenging little roads for fairly modest results in terms of scenery or activities.
It’s raining again tonight as we sip our Sauvignon Blanc in the Ahipara Holiday Park this evening, at the south end of 90-Mile Beach, but we realize we’re still glad we returned to New Zealand.
