As we get within 90 minutes of Johannesburg on the Shosholoza Meyl Premier Classe train, the scenery has not only flattened out from yesterday's majestic mountains but has changed to a flat and arid U.S. Southwest type of scenery. We passed a couple of neighborhoods featuring houses with red-tiled roofs that wouldn't have looked out of place in some parts of Albuquerque.
We're moving through more industrialized areas and we doubt we'll see much more in the way of pretty scenery. We've probably caught this trip's final glimpses of the ubiquitous termite mounds.
Still, it's all interesting.
We pass by a large storage facility for derelict old train engines.
People everywhere, walking, riding bikes, or just sitting.
