Our guide meets us promptly in the lobby at 8:00 a.m. We're touring with a pleasant trio of folks from Pennsylvania who are wrapping up several days in Taiwan after a visit to Hong Kong, a similar schedule to ours in the exact opposite order.
Our van driver is skilled and as we drive out of Taipei our first impressions are of lots of motor scooters, a "freeway" that our guide points out isn't really free (the "ETC" on vehicles stands for Electronic Toll Collection, soon to be mandatory as the profession of toll booth collector is eliminated), lots of tunnels, and some interesting scenery.
