Shanghai has long been known as the "Pearl of the Orient," and this rather strange looking tower supposedly represents three pearls. We utilized our three-day passes to ride the subway under the river to Pudong, the former rice paddies there having given way to an amazing forest of high rises.
As far as this particular "pearl" goes, it didn't look any better up close to us, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
As an aside, while we no longer feel comfortable using any variations of the word "Orient," eschewing it for "Asian," the Chinese apparently have no such reservations.
