The crew members were exceptionally friendly, and the nice touches included coat hangers for each seat and pilots'-view (and downward-facing) cameras.
Japanese immigration was less than 30 minutes, but the line for our Japan Rail Pass was, ugh, 40 minutes in a warm little room.
The employee did assign us seats to ride the Narita Express, transferring at Shinagawa, the station after Tokyo, to the bullet train to Kyoto.
We traveled the 281 miles in 2 1/2 hours, including several stops. This wasn't the fastest biller train, but it was fast.
