South Africa Wine Tour: Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

The charming Rehana of Cape Convoy Tours picked us up at the Hilton this morning and drove us to these two adjacent wine regions.

Rehana is of Indian heritage, so we had interesting discussions with her about the changes in South Africa over the last few decades.

Rehana drove us around the beautiful university town of Stellenbosch, pointing out the Dutch architecture dating back to the 1600s. The weather unfortunately did not cooperate so we retreated to the car after being drizzled on as we walked around the botanical garden.

Our first wine stop was the Lanzerac winery featuring a wine and chocolate pairing. Fun! In retrospect, those might been our favorite wines of the day. No doubt the chocolate helped.

We enjoyed a serious lunch with wine pairings (Rehana doesn’t drink wine so cheerfully went without) at the Wert Restaurant in Boschendal Winery.

Our final winery of the day was La Motte, which we also enjoyed. So many wineries - so little time.

The favored whites here seem to be Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, while the reds featured include Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and of course South Africa’s unique Pinotage. We do continue to enjoy blends more and more, here and elsewhere.

On our third visit to Cape Town, we finally made it to their wine country. A very good day.
