Early in Oakland

After a pleasant flight LIH-OAK, we overnighted at the Airport Hilton in Oakland, managing a few hours of sleep and even a quick breakfast before catching a 7:00AM shuttle back to the airport, little more than five minutes away.

The airport is calm early Sunday morning and we’re alteady seated in Row 2 as the plane fills up.

We fly to Seattle, where we’ll have a couple of hours and use our Alaska Lounge passes before the last hop up to BLI.

Kapa’a: Sam’s Ocean View Restaurant

This well-regarded joint overlooks the locale of our bike ride.

Happy Hour merged into dinner, and we had these Ahi Nachos boxed to finish at some later point in our room.

The cauliflower was also delicious.

Brian’s flank steak with chimmichurri sauce was delicious.

Kathy’s fish and chips, made with fresh island Mahi, was also a hit.

Great view, great place!

A Drive to Kauai’s ‘Dry Cave’

A spectacular drive...

Road work and a half dozen one-way bridges only added to the excitement.

Kapa’a Bike Ride

Our Hilton Garden Inn includes a two-hour bike rental.

There’s no way we could comfortably ride for two hours in this heat even on the level paved oceanfront path, but we did manage an hour and enjoyed the beautiful views.

Kapaa: Paniolo Santa Maria Style Barbecue

It could have beeen great.

We showed up at the right time and grabbed a great table right in front of the stage.

We ordered the tri-tip nachos and they proved to be excellent.

Then the music started, and it was way too loud on open-mike night for us.

We moved inside and it was way too hot for us. Aren’t we fussy?

We ordered the two-meat plate to share but they were out of pork ribs and out of tri-tip, odd since a mainstay of Santa Maria Barbecue is tri-tip.

We went with chicken and boneless pork, both underwhelming.

The side of onion rings was excellent.

It was all reasonably priced and we feel like curmudgeons for not enjoying it all.

We’d try them again on a return trip.

Wailua Shave Ice on Kauai

Some claim it’s the best. We won’t argue with that.

Of course, at $7.50 each (with added ice cream) it should be good.
